Tilted Ash

I've been working primarily with coal ash for most of this year.

The bulk of the work has been photography, but I surprised myself by finishing with a sculpture.

Small Sculpture

I've been trying to understand leather a bit.

This is the first piece in a while that I'm happy with (for scale, the knife is 7 inches long)




Update: 2 June 2014: I took another set with different lighting on a steel background. I lie these better, but thought I'd keep both up.

Split_Leather

Finally finished this piece! It took a while, mostly to fab the base (yes, that's the part you don't see much of…). A dull saw blade was part of the problem, coupled with the added excitement of having the screen vaporize when I hit it with an arc welder (finally decided to tie it with fine copper wire).

Per my convention, I don't write much about what I'm trying to achieve in a piece (or what it "means").

Overall dimensions are 16"w x 29"h x "16.5"d

Broken flow 2012

Not quite sure why that's my title for this piece, but it does feel right.

A couple notes: the black rocks under the reinforced glass are coal, they're setting on a piece of canvas roughly painted black. The epoxy holding the reinforced glass onto the steel is 3M 9170 -- it's strong, very clear, and has an ideal working time.

Nina Canell's Telepath

I was in Stockholm recently and came across the work of Nina Canell at the Noderna Museet.

I found it striking, so I'm sharing. I believe this piece is called telepath

New Sculpture/photo

Here's a photo of a new sculpture, but since the material in the lower section is just sawdust, I don't think the sculpture itself has any permanence.

Russian Constructivism Redux?

It feels a bit like that to me.

Skull Altar II

Just finished a new sculpture. It is centered around a cow skull.

Given the base skull it is pretty big 30 in wide x 48 in deep

I call it Skull Altar II because it is reminiscent of Skull Altar an earlier piece of mine, although I will admit that the first piece has more of an "altar" feel.

Mixed Media

Just finished up a new sculpture and it is mixed media to say the least -- including a skull, glass, steel and even a photo (behind the glass) from my Arizona set.

It is approximately 14 inches high.
